Explore how your income translates into estimated taxes.
Transparent by design.
Planning estimates, not a tax return or paycheck withholding calculation. Rules checked September 29, 2026.
What this estimate includes
Progressive federal income tax, preferential qualified-dividend and long-term-gain rates, Social Security, Medicare, Additional Medicare, self-employment tax and net investment income tax.
Joint filers assign wage and business income to each spouse so Social Security caps apply separately. Bonuses and vested RSUs are ordinary wage income; withholding rates do not determine final tax.
Limits and assumptions
Choose 2025 to compare with calculators covering the 2025 filing year. Social Security caps and state payroll rates change with the selected year.
Continuous brackets are used instead of tax-table rounding. Local income taxes (city, county and school district) are not included.
Federal and state AMT, EITC, refundable child credits, other special credits, capital or rental losses, Social Security benefits, foreign income, multi-state residency, early-withdrawal penalties, and tax-exempt bond differences are not modeled. High-income and business estimates may differ materially from a filed return.
Contribution eligibility and limits, QBI, itemized-deduction limits, and special federal deductions must be calculated separately before entry. Itemized mode uses exactly the totals supplied, even below the standard deduction. Married separate filers must allocate community income themselves and comply with coordinated deduction rules.
After-tax income includes all entered income, including noncash RSU vesting and taxable rental profit. It is not necessarily cash available to spend. Employer payroll taxes, withholding and estimated payments are not included.
California check · SmartAsset · September 2026
Three salary scenarios were entered into SmartAsset’s 2025 California calculator: $50,000, $150,000, and $150,000 with a $20,000 traditional 401(k). Federal income tax and FICA agree within $1 when PayFathom is set to 2025. State and take-home totals differ because PayFathom includes California exemption credits and SDI. SmartAsset’s California results are consistent with deducting the $153 personal exemption from income instead of tax; PayFathom retains the FTB credit treatment.
This is a bounded salary comparison, not independent validation of every supported tax situation. Both models use continuous brackets; filed tax-table amounts can differ slightly. AMT and refundable credits remain excluded.
